Garment Finishing Techniques: How To Put In a Hem
Led by Jean Stewart
This is part of a class series that is aimed at helping you learn how to finish a garment.
There is a saying, “The last 20% of a project takes 80% of the time,” which unfortunately is very true when it comes to sewing a garment. Zippers need to be put in, linings need to be attached, under-stitching needs to be done on the necklines, and hems need to be put in.
In this class we are going to concentrate on hemming techniques. We will learn how to do a narrow hem (without your narrow hemming foot), a blind hem (by hand) and a hidden hem (also by hand). And if time allows, we will go over a Pucci hem which is perfect for loose knits.
If you have a project that needs a hem, feel free to bring it into class especially if one of the above techniques are what you want to use. Otherwise, I will provide sample fabrics for you to sew on and take home as examples for future reference.
Students must have good knowledge of their machines, know how to sew a straight seam and have basic sewing skills.
