Hand Sashiko
Led by Helene Knott
Sashiko is a classic form of Japanese needlework dating back to antiquity. Superficially, it resembles quilting, but the thread is coarser, and the stitches are larger. The resulting work is rustic and often utilitarian, so it is considered more of a country or folk art in Japan than a formal one. There is a wide variety of classical Sashiko designs, but the stitching method can be applied to patterns and designs far beyond the traditional Japanese patterns. In the class, students will learn the history and basics of Sashiko while stitching a small mat, coaster, or mug rug. You can also stitch a Sashiko motif onto a wine bottle gift bag for that extra special holiday bottle of wine (or Sake). A small coaster with a simple traditional design can be stitched in about an hour, so these may make excellent last minute Holiday or hostess gifts. Or stitch a collection of designs and assemble them into a table mat or runner.
