Inlaid Felt Applique

This unusual ethnic inlaid applique technique is unique to Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, where it is used to make rugs from heavy felt. The resulting work looks like applique but the surface is flush. In the traditional method, the inlaid pieces are painstakingly stitched to one another by hand using a herringbone embroidery stitch; in this class, you will stitch the pieces together with a programmed embroidery stitch; most basic machines with programmed stitches will have several suitable for this application, or you can opt to use a zig zag stitch to bridge the pieces. There is also the option of doing the stitching the traditional way – by hand – if you wish.
